City Pages Done Right: Ranking in Carmel, Fishers & Beyond Without Duplicate Content

If you serve customers in Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, and Avon, you want to show up when people in each of those cities search for your service. City pages (also called service area or location pages) are how you get there.

But most businesses do them wrong, and Google ignores them.

The copy-paste problem

Here’s what usually happens. Someone writes one page:

“ABC Roofing provides top-quality roofing services in Carmel, Indiana. Our Carmel roofing experts…”

Then they duplicate it eleven times and swap in a new city name. Carmel becomes Fishers, Fishers becomes Greenwood, and so on.

Google has seen this trick millions of times. Pages that are nearly identical apart from the city name are considered low-value, and they often don’t rank at all. Worse, a site full of thin, duplicate pages can drag down how Google sees the entire website.

What makes a city page worth ranking

A good city page answers a simple question: why is this page useful to someone in this specific city?

That means real, unique content. Here’s what I include:

Local context

What’s actually different about serving this area? Carmel homeowners and Plainfield logistics companies have different needs. Older homes in Irvington have different problems than new builds in Westfield.

Neighborhoods and landmarks

Mention the specific neighborhoods, landmarks, and areas you serve. Not as a keyword dump, but naturally: “We regularly work in West Clay, Home Place, and around Clay Terrace.”

Local proof

Projects you’ve completed in that city, reviews from customers there, and photos from local jobs. This is the most powerful content you can add.

City-specific FAQs

Questions people in that area actually ask. Permit requirements, common local issues, typical timelines.

Nearby areas

Link to your pages for neighboring cities. It helps visitors and helps Google understand your service area.

How many city pages should you have?

Only as many as you can make genuinely useful, and only for areas you actually serve.

For most Indianapolis-area businesses, that’s somewhere between 5 and 15. Building 100 pages for every town within 50 miles almost always backfires.

A good approach:

  1. Start with your core markets. Where do most of your customers come from today?
  2. Add high-value targets. Which nearby cities have the most demand for your service?
  3. Expand as you get local proof. Add new pages once you have projects and reviews there.

Structure that works

Here’s a simple structure I use:

  • URL: /areas/carmel/ or /carmel-roofing/. Short and clear.
  • Title tag: “Roof Replacement in Carmel, IN | ABC Roofing”
  • H1: Clear and specific to the service and city
  • Intro: Unique paragraph about serving that community
  • Services: What you offer there, linking to your main service pages
  • Local proof: Projects, reviews, and photos
  • FAQs: City-specific questions
  • Call to action: Phone number and quote form

Don’t forget your Google Business Profile

City pages work alongside your Google Business Profile, not instead of it. Make sure your GBP service area includes the cities you’re building pages for.

Example: how I do it

Crossroad Leads serves 12 cities across Central Indiana, and each one has its own page with unique content about that market. Take a look at the Carmel page and the Plainfield page. They talk about genuinely different customers, because Carmel and Plainfield are different.
