Local SEO

Local SEO for Indianapolis Businesses: The Complete Beginner's Guide

When someone in Indianapolis searches “plumber near me” or “best tacos in Fountain Square,” Google shows them a very specific set of results. Local SEO is the work of making sure your business is in those results.

This guide covers the fundamentals in plain English, with no jargon.

What makes local SEO different

Regular SEO is about ranking for a topic anywhere. Local SEO is about ranking for a topic in a place. Google treats these searches differently because the searcher wants something nearby, usually right now.

For local searches, Google typically shows:

  1. The map pack. The map with three business listings near the top of the page.
  2. Organic results. The traditional blue links below it.

Showing up in both is the goal. The map pack gets a huge share of clicks for local searches, so it’s often the first priority.

The three things Google looks at

Google has said publicly that local rankings come down to three factors:

  • Relevance: How well does your business match what the person searched for?
  • Distance: How close is your business to the searcher (or the location in their search)?
  • Prominence: How well-known and trusted is your business online? Think reviews, links, mentions, and overall web presence.

You can’t change your distance. But you can absolutely improve relevance and prominence.

Step 1: Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local SEO asset you have. It controls how you appear in the map pack and on Google Maps.

At minimum:

  • Choose the most accurate primary category (this matters a lot)
  • Add every service you offer
  • Set your service area to the Indy-area cities you actually serve
  • Upload real photos of your work, team, and vehicles
  • Keep your hours accurate, including holidays

Step 2: Build a website Google can understand

Your website backs up everything your GBP claims. Google wants to see:

  • A dedicated page for each core service. Not one page that lists everything.
  • Pages for the areas you serve. If you work in Carmel, Fishers, and Greenwood, you need content about those places. (Here’s how to do city pages the right way.)
  • Consistent contact info. Your business name and phone number should match your GBP exactly.
  • Speed. Slow sites lose visitors and rankings. More on that in my post on website speed.
  • Schema markup. Code that tells Google exactly what your business is and where it operates. See schema markup explained.

Step 3: Get reviews, consistently

Reviews feed directly into prominence. They also convert. People compare star ratings and review counts before they ever click.

The key word is consistently. Ten reviews in one week followed by nothing for a year looks odd. A steady flow of new reviews is healthier. I cover practical ways to do this in how to get more Google reviews.

Step 4: Get listed in the right places

Citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites: directories like Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, the BBB, and industry-specific sites.

Accuracy matters more than volume. One wrong phone number on an old directory can confuse Google about which info is correct.

Step 5: Create helpful local content

Blog posts and resources that answer real customer questions build topical authority. “How much does a roof replacement cost in Indianapolis?” is a far better post than “5 Roofing Tips.”

How long does it take?

Usually 3–6 months to see meaningful results, sometimes faster in suburbs like Zionsville or Greenfield, and sometimes slower for competitive Indianapolis keywords. I break that down in how long SEO takes.

Where to start this week

If you only do three things:

  1. Claim your Google Business Profile and fill out every field.
  2. Ask your five happiest recent customers for a Google review.
  3. Make sure your website has a separate page for each service you offer.
