Why Your Website Isn't Getting Calls (and How to Fix It)

A business owner told me recently, “My website gets visitors. I can see it in the stats. But the phone never rings.”

That’s one of the most frustrating problems in local marketing, and one of the most fixable. Usually it comes down to a handful of issues.

1. Your phone number is hard to find (or tap)

This sounds obvious, but it’s the number one issue I see. Visitors on a phone shouldn’t have to scroll, hunt, or copy-paste your number.

Fix it:

  • Put your phone number in the header of every page
  • Make it a tap-to-call link (tel: link), not just text or an image
  • Add a sticky “Call Now” button on mobile

2. The site is slow

People don’t wait. If your page takes several seconds to load on a phone, many visitors are gone before they see anything. Slow sites also rank lower.

Fix it: Compress images, ditch unnecessary plugins and sliders, and get on fast hosting. I dig into this in why website speed matters.

3. It doesn’t say what you do in five seconds

A visitor should know within seconds:

  • What you do
  • Where you do it
  • How to contact you

A homepage headline like “Welcome to Our Website” or “Quality You Can Trust” tells them nothing. “Emergency Plumbing Repair in Greenwood & the Southside” tells them everything.

4. There’s no reason to choose you

Your competitors are one tap away. What makes you the right choice? Give them proof:

  • Reviews and star ratings (real ones)
  • Years of experience, licenses, certifications
  • Guarantees (“If we’re late, the service call is free”)
  • Photos of real work, not stock photos

5. Your forms are too long

Every extra field you add is another reason to quit. You don’t need their mailing address and how they heard about you before you’ve even talked.

Fix it: Name, phone, email, and what they need. That’s it. Get the rest on the call.

6. There’s no clear next step

Every page should end with a clear call to action: “Call for a free estimate,” “Book your inspection,” “Get a quote.” Don’t make visitors figure out what to do next.

7. It’s not built for mobile

Most local searches happen on phones. If your site was designed on a desktop and “shrinks” for mobile, the buttons are probably tiny, the text is hard to read, and the phone number is buried.

Fix it: Test your own site on your phone. Try to call yourself from it. If that’s annoying, it’s annoying for customers too.

8. You’re getting the wrong traffic

Sometimes the problem isn’t conversion. It’s who’s showing up. If your traffic comes from blog posts that rank nationally, or from searches unrelated to what you sell, those visitors were never going to call.

Fix it: Check which pages get traffic and which searches bring people in. Focus your SEO on high-intent local searches like “[service] + [city].”

How to know what’s actually working

Without call tracking, you’re guessing. Tracking tells you which pages and sources produce calls, so you can double down on what works.

A quick self-audit

Grab your phone and answer honestly:

  1. Can I call the business within one tap from the homepage?
  2. Does the page load in under 3 seconds?
  3. Do I immediately know what they do and where?
  4. Is there proof they’re good at it?
  5. Is the quote form short?

If you said “no” to any of these, you’ve found your leak.
